Tile Trends Blend in 2018

Style was key for tile introductions at The International Surface Event (TISE) this year. In addition to popular mainstays like marble, wood, and colorful mosaics, different aesthetics are blended together to create stunning new product lines. Tile trends are slowly changing in our industry.

Going with the Grain

Tile that looks similar to wood tile has been wildly popular for the past few years and that trend shows no signs of abating. Though, it is changing into a wider format from the standard 5″ to 8″ with wider formats comes along with longer lengths. Rectified porcelain tile gives a smooth edge design for small grout joints with the realism of hardwood.
From modern, traditional or rustic – the variety of products and colors make the choices more difficult. The right tile gives the dramatic look that your home deserves.

High Gloss is back in and works by mixing both refined and traditional wood visuals. The shore look with a rustic blending of bold and subdue colors with whitewashed effects give a classic look for any kitchen or living space. Floors, walls and backsplash give the home a toned down look so the cabinets and furniture take lead in the room.

Mixed Materials, Revitalize Patterns

Natural stone and wood were out in full force last year, but new tile offerings saw a blurring of the lines between different aesthetics.

In fact, blending materials was the theme at many manufacturers’ booth this year. Over time we’ve seen this trend happen where wood and other materials mixed together. We love that trend and we’ve heard from the market that it’s going to continue to be one that’s ever evolving. We have new products coming out with a complementary color palette so you can mix and match as much as you like and really let your creativity fly

Decoration, Color Coming Back

Although white and gray are still incredibly popular colors for tile, especially in marble visuals, splashes of color are becoming more dominant over the traditional black, white, and beige. New on the scene are jewel tones and dark browns to warm up design palettes.

As warmer palettes are making a comeback, look for muted grays, taupe’s, and sage green to sea blues become slowly more dominant as accents.

Patterns are also coming back to tile in both wall and floor applications. In addition to popular geometric shapes on the wall (like diamonds, hexagons, chevron and herringbone) the tiles themselves are becoming more artistic.

Daltile introduced a new encaustic look with its Quartetto, an 8” x 8” tile featuring a handmade look. The collection features eight different decorative patterns available in both warm and cool palettes.

Still Going Big

Large format tile was a big presence at the show – literally – with some panels and slabs towering up to 10 feet in height. The norm of 12 x 12 is no longer with 12 x 24 to 24 x24 being the new norm and wall tiles 24 x 48 are up and coming for shower walls.

Daltile added new visuals to its Panoramic Porcelain collection. The large panels are featured in two collections — Elemental, which features natural stone and marble visuals, and Industrial, which features concrete and limestone visuals.

Big Doesn’t Mean Square
Daltile Bee Hive Tile is available in 6 colors to design any pattern for a floor or wall.

Square and rectangular have dominated the tile scene for the past 10 years. Now big tile comes in Hexagon and patterned shapes that add drama to any room in the home. A mixture of colors and textures create a one of a kind floor that will enhance the look of any home.

Up the Wall
American Olean’s Visual Impressions brings 3D texture to wall tile

Mosaics, geometrics, patterns and 3D textures as wall-specific applications are just coming out in 2018. People are really stepping outside the box and adding texture to their walls with features in both smooth and textured pieces that can be mixed and matched across vertical applications.

American Olean showcased its Visual Impressions wall tile, which offers 3D patterns across a neutral color palette that allows designers to create a customizable, textured wall.

Daltile’s Cascading Waters brought a new perspective to glass mosaics. Featuring mixed lengths and an inverted bevel, the tiles can be installed vertically or horizontally and add customization texture. It adds a pop of nice, shimmery color that’s fun and interesting.

Tile Can Go Anywhere

Tile is not just for bathrooms anymore. The trend to take porcelain tile everywhere in the home is not just a European design but an American design- mixing modern, rustic looks with texture and pattern. Stop by any of our showrooms to start your project.
